Cisco

Lead Artist - FranCisco Vargas

FranCisco Vargas is a self-made man who started his entrepreneurial business plan at age 11 as a shoeshine boy on streets of Chinatown, in Fresno California, where he still thrives today.  He started painting signs in San Jose, CA 25 years ago. Moved back to Fresno in 1989.

He's been a Walldog Project Leader in Lincoln, and in Jacksonville, IL. He has two DVD documentaries of The Walldogs in Lodi, CA and the Dixie Letterheads outside of Atlanta, GA. He also was a contributing writer for Sign Builders Illustrated, which took him to Seattle, WA to interview the sister of Jimi Hendrix, and other sign painters. His work includes many large-scale murals in Fresno and a brief stint in LA where he “painted the stars”, including a Playboy centerfold and show cards (a particularly enjoyable project.)

Cisco painted his way across America in the late 90’s billing himself as “The Traveling Millennium SignArtist”.  His goal was Key WestFlorida, which took him four months to reach, as he attempted to work his way across the country.  With the sign technology and the internet he was able to make it a working vacation by his art form of sign painting. He set out to see the country, meet people, and document his travels and trials. Not having enough money to actually fill his RV which only got 7 miles to the gallon to reach Florida, he posted his route using a signpainters website www.letterville.com before he left and “sold” his journey to businesses and other sign painters along the route who met him along his travels to offer him encouragement, tips on jobs, or actual work so he could keep going. He posted reports online as he moved from city to city, a novel idea for many people just ten years ago.

Today he is home in Fresno and looking forward to his sojourn, by jet, not a 1977 Winnebego, to paint a mural in Minneapolis this summer. For more info on Cisco his website is www.franciscovargas.com
